Tour Itinerary

You will receive a warm welcome by your local hosts, Rosemarie and Greg Horler at their island home, Awarakau Lodge, which overlooks the dramatic coastline of Petre Bay. Their local connections ensure we can responsibly visit the island's many historical and natural highlights, accessible only by private land with either Greg, or Denny who worked for the Department of Conservation.

From whalers and sealers, missionaries, fishermen to farmers, let your local guides engage you in local culture and history, through legends of the first Moriori, Māori and European settlers, visiting key locations with historic significance along the way.

We have specifically chosen this time of year to see the Chatham Islands' iconic flowering species, the Chatham Island Forget-me-not, growing in the wild.

If weather permits, you will also have the opportunity to experience a day trip by boat to the outlying islands, the best way to see the pelagic seabird birds. Glen King of Owenga Boat Charters will help you identify the species and share about his life on the island as a local fisherman.
