8 Day Tour to Chatham Islands, Rēkohu/Wharekauri
A place steeped in diverse geology and known to the indigenous Moriori as “The Misty Sun”; Rēkohu or Chatham Islands, are one of the most intriguing and hauntingly beautiful archipelago in the South Pacific. Explore the island and its lagoon system, its weather, remoteness and fateful history have shaped the lives of all who live there.
Your journey begins from Auckland, Wellington or Christchurch, aboard an Air Chathams flight. You will receive a warm welcome by local hosts, Rosemarie and Greg Horler of Awarakau Lodge, your relaxing and comfortable ‘home’ during your stay. Their local connections ensure we can responsibly visit the island's many historical and natural highlights, accessible only by private land.
With the islands origins submerged in volcanic activity, you will experience the splatter rocks and basalt columns along with a visit to local wetlands and nature reserves to spot native wildlife unique to the island and hear about the conservation initiatives on the island.
A photographer’s paradise, the Chatham Islands have plenty of dramatic, rugged terrain to capture. If weather permits, you will also have the opportunity to experience a day trip to Rangiaotea, Rangiauria, Pitt Island.
From whalers and sealers, missionaries, fishermen to farmers, let your local guides engage you in local culture and history, through legends of the first Moriori, Māori and European settlers, visiting key locations with historic significance along the way. Places such as the dendroglyph grove, a location of great spiritual significance for the Moriori, the statue of Tommy Solomon who was the last full-blooded Moriori, and Stone Cottage at Maunganui are all key highlights of this unique tour.
